Veterans attend International Journalism Week

Veteran journalists and subject matter experts were among the speakers at the 2025 International Journalism Week. This is an annual conference hosted at the University of Sheffield. The event served as a forum for media professionals to discuss the challenges facing their field in a rapidly changing world.

What was the theme?

The central theme for the 2025 IJW was ‘Journalism in the age of drone warfare and democratic decline.’ These well-attended sessions were designed to provide knowledge and share real-world experiences with attendees, including students of journalism.

What topics were covered in talks, workshops, and panel discussions?

The topics included addressing the critical risks faced by reporters in conflict zones, especially in an era of advanced military technology like drones, which many in the industry argue increase civilian and journalist casualties. Coverage of drone warfare was another topic that was covered in depth. Those present talked about the complexities and ethical considerations of reporting on conflicts that use remote warfare tactics. Limited options for fact-checking and verification of sources can make accurate reporting incredibly difficult in conflict zones, and drone warfare can bring heightened security risks for journalists.

For those who want to graduate with a journalism degree, there are many opportunities on your doorstep. Experience in the industry following your journalism degree is usually preferred.

What are other examples of veterans involved in journalism?

The International Journalism Festival is held in Perugia, Italy, and regularly includes a wide variety of experienced and veteran journalists among its thousands of speakers and participants, fostering global dialogue and networking opportunities.
