How to help a disabled person live independently

When living with a disability one of the main aims many of these people have is to maintain as much of their independence as they can. In some cases,  this can be difficult but there are ways in which a person can be supported to be as independent as possible, even if it means using equipment and strategies in order to achieve this.

Here are some of the things that you can put in place to help.

  • Equipment – there are many different types of equipment that can help diabled people to be more independent. These include grab rails to help keep them safe as well as items that can help with everyday tasks such as washing and getting dressed. There are also Mobility Aids like the ones from that can help with getting around both at home and when out and about.

  • Support – there are care companies and voluntary organisations that will help provide people to support the individual. This could simply be someone to go with them to the shops once a week. It enables the disabled individual to undertake this task whilst still feeling supported.
  • Layout – there are ways in which you can have your home laid out to help with individuals accessing the areas and the items that they need in a safe and efficient way.
